Autism Spectrum Disorder students are making up an increasing percentage of our school populations. This session will expose you to programming ideas and grant opportunities available to schools to help implement programming that targets students with ASD. Programming ideas include job skills, cooperative learning and the use of inflatable mascots (crazy, I know…but the science is there) to help ASD students interact with the community. Painless Poetry: Promoting Poetry Reading through Poetry Writing

This program will emphasize hands-on poetry writing for attendees, using structured and formulaic approaches to writing poetry. This will be accompanied by PowerPoint examples and descriptions on how this approach has been used to foster creativity and a love of poetry in children, tweens, teens, and ESL young adults in schools and public libraries. Participants will be encouraged to share a few of the poems. Handouts will detail must-have poetry books and numerous online resources.

After a tumultuous year at Boston Latin School around the issue of race, the librarian and 8th grade history teacher created a unit focusing on identity, race, and civil discourse. We selected a variety of media for students to analyze making connections between identity, stereotypes and individual world views. A variety of media, tools, and strategies from Facing History were integrated to ensure maximum student engagement, promote discussion, and build a foundation for continued discussions.

Creating Something from Nothing

When the L&N STEM Academy opened 6 years ago, the library media center was an empty room. The budget that normally would have been earmarked for an opening day collection and furnishings was reallocated to pay for Smart Boards, computers, and Apple TVs. Innovation and ingenuity led the day in establishing relationships and collaborations to create a library that would be attractive and useful to both the students and faculty.
